Mr Peter Avis of Bury St Edmunds was murdered by a Polish immigrant, Mr Melanuik, who prior to the incident had escaped a Polish prison after serving time for a robbery conviction.

David Ruffley MP has asked the Home Secretary, Theresa May, how Mr Melanuik was able to enter the UK through a policed border without detection. The UK Border Agency should clarify whether Mr Melanuik used a fake passport or was simply not stopped by the authorities.

Mr Ruffley has asked what safeguards are in place to stop criminals from entering the UK and what went wrong in the case of Mr Melanuik.
